Transport of P-47D Thunderbolts of the 318 Fighter Group USAAF by the escort carriers CVE-61 Manila Bay (pictured) and CVE-62 Natoma Bay to the Mariana Island of Saipan. On 23 June 1944, east of Saipan, attack by four Japanese D3A dive bombers.

Catapult launch by Lt. Eubanks Barnhill to prevent further Japanese attacks.   In the same manner, all P-17Ds of the 318 FG were sent to the newly captured East Field airfield on Saipan.
